Swine flu claims second U.S. victim

The United States on Tuesday recorded its second swine-flu death and the first of an American — a Texas woman living near the Mexico border. The woman lived in Cameron County, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services.

The woman, who was said to have chronic underlying health conditions, died earlier this week. Further details were not available. The state’s health department is reporting 61 confirmed cases of H1NI flu.

In unrelated developments on Tuesday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued new guidance that schools shouldn't close when students come down with swine flu — and schools closed because of swine flu may reopen.

Following that, Dallas County Medical Director Dr. John Carlo also released new recommendations for the county’s school districts that had followed the CDC guidance, though currently closed schools should continue to follow their recommended school opening date, he advised.

Dallas County officials also reported eight new cases of confirmed swine flu on Tuesday, and that the average date of onset for those who were sick was April 25. The new cases pushes up the county’s total number of confirmed cases to 41.

Tarrant County public health officials said Tuesday they had no new confirmed cases, but had four new probable cases of swine flu. Separately, the Fort Worth Independent School District said it will reopen schools on Friday, following the recommendation of the Tarrant County Public Health Department.

And, in Denton County, health officials said they had four new probable swine flu cases on Tuesday: one case each from Carrollton, Flower Mound, Frisco and Lewisville. Before Tuesday, it had 10 confirmed cases countywide.

The Lake Dallas school district announced Tuesday before the CDC guidance was issued that it planned to close its school district, according to Denton County Health Department spokeswoman Betsy Haggard. The Denton and Lewisville school districts, which had closed all their schools, both said that they planned to open on Thursday, in response to the CDC guidance.
