Forest Grove schools to close because of swine flu

All schools in the Forest Grove School District will be closed Monday and Tuesday because a probable case of swine flu has been reported at Cornelius Elementary School.

The decision to close the schools was made Sunday afternoon upon the recommendation of the Washington County Department of Health & Human Services. The Forest Grove Community School will also be closed for two days, and Cornelius Elementary will be closed all week.

District administration, working with health officials, will decide Tuesday whether other schools in the district will be able to reopen Wednesday. All sports, clubs and other school activities at all schools are canceled for Monday and Tuesday.

District officials have asked students to not congregate in other settings, or at any of the school playgrounds on those days. By closing for two days, district officials believe they will be able to determine if the virus has spread.
