Two cases of swine flu have been confirmed in Colorado, authorities said Thursday.
They are the first local cases of the rapidly spreading disease. Colorado officials earlier had asked the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to test several local cases to determine if they were swine flu rather than some other illness.
Dr. Ned Calonge, chief medical officer of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, said at a news conference Thursday that the cases involved:
? An Arapahoe County woman in her 30s who had recently returned from a cruise to Mexico, where the current flu outbreak originated, and had then spent time in San Diego. She was not hospitalized.
? A Douglas County man in his 40s who works as a baggage handler at Denver International Airport. The man was hospitalized for three days.
Both patients are now recovering, Calonge said.
Local officials had been saying for days that it was only a matter of time before a Colorado case was confirmed, given how fast the disease is spreading.
Prior to the announcement of two Colorado cases and a new case in Minnesota, the CDC said there were 109 confirmed U.S. cases of swine flu in 11 states. About half of the cases were in New York, plus 26 in Texas and 14 in California.
